SMA’s board-certified medical oncologists oversee all aspects of health care for our cancer patients. Our doctors evaluate and treat patients in our clinic. The oncologists first work closely with pathologists and radiologists to identify the cancer type and extent of disease. They rigorously review the latest cancer research information and prescribe the most promising treatments. They work as a team with radiation oncologists and surgeons in a multidisciplinary approach to offer the most effective treatment tailored for each patient’s unique medical situation. Our oncologists partner with patients to make a treatment plan. Sometimes careful watching without any treatment is warranted. When treatments are employed, the providers monitor patients frequently to prevent and treat side effects. Our oncologists value the close relationship with all patients and provide long-term follow-up care.
Approach to Care
SMA was the first to offer medical oncology care to patients in Western Massachusetts. We employ the most advanced treatments available to offer our cancer patients the highest chance of a lasting remission with the goal of preserving the best quality of life possible. Our experienced, compassionate oncologists and nurses understand the intense emotional stress that accompanies a diagnosis of cancer and believe in the importance of treating our patients with a high degree of personal attention. We believe that effective communication between providers and patients is the key to delivering excellent healthcare. We work with patients to understand their needs. We set goals to help patients return to work; maintain their dignity and independence at home; and continue to participate in important family events. Our providers meet frequently with patients in our clinic to assess treatment progress and quality of life. We recognize the importance of our patients’ caregivers and also seek to address their concerns.
