Liver Biopsy

What is a liver biopsy?

A liver biopsy will enable your doctor to determine liver function and the presence of any abnormalities through examination of liver tissue.

What preparation is needed?

On the evening before your procedure, do not eat anything after midnight. You may take your morning medications except as listed on next page*. A nurse will ask your medical history and check your blood pressure, pulse, respirations and temperature.

How is the test done?

You will be asked to lie flat on your back on the table. The doctor will cleanse and drape area on your abdomen and inject a local anesthetic. You will be asked to hold your breath and lie still as the doctor inserts the biopsy needle into your liver. The needle may cause a sensation of pressure and some discomfort in your right upper back. The biopsy will only take a few seconds. An ultrasound or fluoroscopy will be used to guide the placement of the needle.

What can I expect after the test?

You will be returned to either a day-stay room or inpatient room depending on your doctor’s orders. You will be asked to remain in bed for 4 hours, lying on your right side for the first 2 hours. Your vital signs will be checked often during this time. You may also have pain and discomfort for several hours. You can use Tylenol to control pain while at home. After discharge, you will be instructed to remain home for the day. You may be up and about. Limit strenuous activities such as heavy lifting for 24 hours.

You will have blood drawn within one month of the procedure. Make sure you are given a requisition for these tests. (CBC with automated differential and PT/INR)

*Do not take aspirin, Ibuprofen, anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamins C, E garlic or drugs to control pain caused by arthritis for 7 days before the procedure. Use Tylenol to control the pain. If you are on blood thinners, they also must be stopped. You will need to talk to your primary care physician or your cardiologist about this. *

*You must have a ride home from someone following this procedure and also someone must stay with you for the rest of the day. *

Que es una biopsia del higado?

Una biopsia hepatica permitira que su medico determine la function hepatica y la presencia de cualquier anormalidad durante la examinacion del tejido hepatico.

Que preparacion se necesita?

La noche antes del procedimiento, no coma nada despues de la media noche. Usted puede tomar sus medicamentos por la manana, con la exepcion de los medicamentos incluidos en la proxima pagina. Una enfermera le preguntara por su historia medica y le cojera la presion arterial, el pulso, la respiracion y la temperatura.

Come se hace la prueba?

Se le pedira que se acueste boca arriba sobre la mesa, el doctor le limpiara el area de su abdomen y se le injestaraa anestecia local. Se le pedira que aguante su respiracion y permanecer inmovil durante el medico le inserta la aguja de biopsia en el higado. La aguja puede provocar una sensacion de presion y algunas molestias en la espalda suprerior derecho. La biopsia solo durara unos pocos segundos. Un ultrasonido o fluoroscopia se utilizara para guiar lo colocacion de la aguja.

Que puede esperar despes de la prueba?

Usted volvera al cuarto de recuperacion o a la sala de hospitalizacion de acuerdo con las ordenes de su medico. Se le pedira que permanesca en una cama durante 4 horas, acostado en e lado derecho por las primeras 2 horas. Sus signos vitals seran tomados con frequencia durante ese tiempo. Usted tambien puede tomar Tylenol para controlar el dolor, cuando llege a su hogar. Despues de darle de alta se le indicara que permanezca en su hogar por el resto del dia. Usted puede levantarse pero limite las actividades vigorosas como levanter objetos pesados durante 24 horas.

Usted tendra una extraccion de sangre en un plazo de un mez antes del procedimiento, asegure de que le den una orden para esa clase de prueba. (CBC with automated differential and PT/INR)

*No tome aspirina, ibuprofen, anti-inflamatorios, vitamina c, e, ajo o medecinas para controlar el dolor de artritis por 7 dias antes del procedimiento. Usted puede usar Tylenol para controlar cualquier dolor. Si usted esta tomando medecinas anticoagulantes, tambien tienen que ser paradas. Usted tiene que hablar con su medico de cabezera o su cardiologo acerca de este procedimiento. *

*Usted tiene que tener transportacion despues de este procedimiento y alguien debe quedarse con usted por el resto del dia. *
