Esophagoscopy

Instructions for Esophagoscopy or Gastroscopy

••• No aspirin or aspirin-containing products for 1 (one) week prior to the examination.

(Tylenol is the only acceptable pain medication.)

  1. You will be given medicine immediately before the examination which will tend to make you somewhat drowsy. This medicine takes several hours to wear off and it is necessary to have someone with you who can drive you home after your release from the hospital.
  2. Following the procedure you will be moved to the Holding Unit at the hospital where you will be observed for any complications resulting from the procedure. During this time your blood pressure and pulse will be taken at regular intervals.
  3. Following discharge from the Holding Unit, you may return home and begin a diet consisting of mainly of liquids or soft foods. A regular diet may be resumed one (1) hour after the procedure.
  4. If you are scheduled for a morning exam, you must fast after midnight (Nothing to eat or drink.)
  5. If you are scheduled for an afternoon exam, you may have clear liquids only for breakfast, and you must fast for six (6) hours prior to the exam. (Nothing to eat or drink.)

YOU WILL NEED A RIDE HOME. THIS IS HOSPITAL REGULATION.
