Pulmonary Function Test- Patient Information
Your physician has ordered Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT) as part of your medical evaluation. The purpose of this test is to measure how well your lungs and respiratory system are working. A series of tests will be performed that will measure the mechanics of breathing and the size of your lungs, and a test that will calculate how efficiently oxygen travels from your lungs into your blood stream.
These tests are non-invasive. You will be using a mouthpiece that goes between your lips and teeth and a soft clothes-pin type clip will be placed on your nose for short periods of time.
In addition, your doctor may have ordered an Arterial Blood Gas test which will provide additional information about your lung function. This test is performed by the pulmonary lab tech at the same time as your PFT.
If you are using inhaled medications (puffers), we ask that you DO NOT use them before your PFT. Your medications will be administered during the test so that lung function can be measured before and after use of your medication. This is also an opportunity to review your technique; to assess whether or not you are using your metered dose inhalers correctly. Bring any questions or concerns with you – this is a perfect time to talk things over.
If you are using Servent or Advair, please DO NOT use your inhaler for 16 hours (2 doses) prior to your scheduled PFT appointment.
All other inhaled medications should not be used 4 hours prior to testing time. This does not apply to nasal inhalers.
We hope this information will explain the indication for the Pulmonary Function Test that you are scheduled for. If you have further questions please do not hesitate to call your physician. More information is available on our website at www.springfieldmed.com.
We look forward to meeting you at the time of your scheduled appointment.
