Liver Biopsy

What is a liver biopsy?

A liver biopsy will enable you to determine liver function and the presence of any abnormalities through examination of liver tissue.

What preparation is needed?

On the evening before your procedure have nothing to eat after midnight. You may take morning medications except as listed below.* A nurse will ask your medical history and check your blood pressure, pulse, respirations and temperatures. You will have blood drawn within one month of the procedure. (CBC with automated differential, PT and PTT)

How is the test done?

You will be asked to lie flat on your back on the table. The doctor will cleanse and drape an area on your abdomen and inject a local anesthetic. You will be asked to hold your breath and lie still as the doctor inserts the biopsy needle into your liver. The needle may cause a sensation of pressure and some discomfort in your right upper back. The biopsy will only take a few seconds. An Ultrasound, or Fluoroscopy will be used to guide the placement of the needle.

What can I expect after the test?

You will be returned to either a daystay room or an inpatient room depending on your doctor's orders. You will be asked to remain in bed for 4 hours, lying on your right side for the first 2 hours. Your vital signs will be checked often during this time. You may also have pain and discomfort for several hours. You can use Tylenol to control pain while at home. After discharge, you will be instructed to remain home for the day. You may be up and about. Limit strenuous activities such as heavy lifting for 24 hours.

*DO NOT TAKE ASPIRIN, IBUPROFEN, ANTI-INFLAMATORY DRUGS, VITAMINS C, E; GARLIC OR DRUGS TO CONTROL PAIN CAUSED BY ARTHRITIS FOR 5 DAYS BEFORE THE PROCEDURE. IF YOU ARE ON BLOOD THINNERS, THEY MUST ALSO BE STOPPED. TALK TO YOUR PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN OR YOUR CARDIOLOGIST ABOUT THIS.

YOU MUST HAVE A RIDE HOME FROM SOMEONE FOLLOWING THE PROCEDURE AND ALSO SOMEONE MUST STAY WITH YOU FOR THE REST OF THE DAY.
